Riverton Houses, Residential complex in Harlem, Manhattan, US.

Riverton Houses is a residential development featuring seven 13-story towers positioned along Fifth Avenue and overlooking the Harlem River in Harlem. The complex spreads across a large site and provides hundreds of apartments within its interconnected buildings and surrounding grounds.

Built in 1947 by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, it was among the first large housing developments in Manhattan to operate without racial segregation policies. This construction marked an important shift in how the city approached residential housing and community access.

This development marked a turning point for African American families in New York who had limited access to quality housing at the time. It represents a moment when a major residential complex opened without racial restrictions, offering new possibilities to many residents.

The location is well connected by public transit to other neighborhoods and the rest of the city, making it easy to reach. The grounds are laid out in a clear way, so visitors can move around without difficulty.

Former New York City Mayor David Dinkins and jazz pianist Billy Taylor both lived in this complex, leaving their mark on its history. These notable residents helped establish it as an important location in Manhattan's cultural story.
