SS Kamloops, lake freighter of Canada Steamship Lines
The SS Kamloops is a sunken lake freighter lying on the floor of Lake Superior off the Keweenaw Peninsula coast. The vessel rests at a depth of about 270 feet (82 meters) and remains largely intact on the lake bottom.
The ship sank in 1927 during a severe storm on Lake Superior and remained lost for decades. Discovery of the wreck in the 1970s allowed the vessel's history as a lost cargo carrier to be documented and studied.
The wreck can only be visited by certified technical divers due to the depth and demanding conditions underwater. Visitors should hire an experienced local dive guide who knows safety protocols and the best season for exploration.
The wreck is known for being unusually well-preserved, with many original structures and details remaining intact. Divers report that the ship's cabins and compartments are still visible, offering a glimpse into daily life aboard.
