Sanborn Field, Research farm at University of Missouri, Columbia, United States
The 7-acre agricultural field contains 38 experimental plots measuring 52.5 by 118.5 feet for testing different crop management techniques and soil treatments.
Established in 1888 by Dean J.W. Sanborn, the field became the first United States facility to measure erosion and agricultural practices effects on soil.
The field maintains its original purpose as an outdoor laboratory where students and researchers study agricultural practices and soil conservation methods.
Located at Rollins Street and College Avenue intersection on the east campus, the field offers guided tours and demonstrations for agricultural education.
Scientists discovered chlortetracycline, the first tetracycline antibiotic, from soil samples collected from plot 23 of Sanborn Field in 1945.
