The original Academic Hall featured a three-story central section with a dome and two wings, constructed using locally produced bricks and limestone columns.
Academic Hall, dedicated in 1843, served as the main building of the University of Missouri until a fire caused by an electric light destroyed it in 1892.
The six Ionic columns that survived the 1892 fire remain standing on Francis Quadrangle and represent the educational legacy of the University of Missouri.
The University of Missouri Archives maintains historical documents and photographs of Academic Hall, accessible through their online exhibit titled Y1.9K: Mizzou in 1900.
During the Civil War, Union troops used Academic Hall as a military base, holding Confederate prisoners in the third-floor library and using books as fuel for fires.
