Schuyler Flatts

Schuyler Flatts is an archaeological site in Albany County where building foundations and everyday objects reveal how people lived along the Hudson River across different time periods. The excavated materials show traces of settlements dating from long ago through more recent centuries.

The Schuyler family purchased the property in 1672 and operated it as a working farm for generations. Construction of the Erie Canal during the 1800s reshaped the landscape and forced the relocation of the local road.

The excavations reveal how multiple communities left traces of their everyday lives in the same location across centuries. Visitors walking through the grounds can sense the layered stories of families who occupied this space at different times.

The site is located along Broadway in Menands and offers guided tours where you can observe ongoing research and recently discovered items. Wear comfortable shoes since much of the visit involves walking on uneven ground.

An older road lies buried beneath modern Broadway, used by travelers and carts centuries ago. This hidden layer preserves evidence of how people moved through the landscape in earlier times.
