Silver Lake Wilderness Area

Silver Lake Wilderness Area is a protected forest spanning more than 100,000 acres of mixed hardwoods, mountain peaks, lakes, and river valleys. The terrain features diverse woodlands with numerous waterways and varying elevations throughout.

The area received official wilderness protection in 1972, marking a commitment to preserving its natural state. This designation banned motorized vehicles and has kept the landscape largely unchanged since that decision.

The landscape reflects its roots as homeland for the Kanyen'kehà:ka people, with visible traces throughout the territory. Walking through these forests, you encounter places and landmarks that tell the story of long human presence here.

The area features an extensive network of hiking trails with multiple routes of varying difficulty levels for different skill levels. Basic overnight accommodations like camping areas and shelters are distributed throughout, making multi-day visits straightforward.

The wilderness contains around 50 separate lakes and water bodies, including the namesake Silver Lake with healthy populations of native brook trout. These waters are ecologically important and offer opportunities for anglers and wildlife watchers.
