St. Anne's Church and Mission Site
St. Anne's Church and Mission Site, Catholic church in Old Town, Maine, US
St. Anne's Church is a wood frame structure on the southern end of Indian Island and features a square tower with Palladian windows and pinnacles. The single-story building with clapboard siding shows historical architectural details including an entrance at the tower base and a distinctive fanlight above.
The mission work began in the late 1600s when French missionaries started working with the Penobscot people. The current church building was constructed in 1830 and registered as a historic place in 1973.
The church serves as a gathering place for the community and reflects the deep religious connection of the Penobscot people to this sacred location. Today services are still held here, showing how central this site remains to island life.
The site is located on Indian Island and is easily reached by local roads. The building can be viewed from outside and offers a peaceful spot to explore the region's history.
A French missionary named Louis-Pierre Thury founded the original mission and shaped centuries of religious tradition on this island. The cemetery and chapel grew together, showing how deep the roots of this community run.
