Strasenburgh Planetarium, Planetarium at East Avenue, Rochester, United States
The Strasenburgh Planetarium is a space exploration facility in Rochester featuring a domed Star Theater with 225 seats equipped with advanced projection systems. The theater presents shows about celestial objects and astronomical phenomena designed for all ages.
The facility opened on September 14, 1968, thanks to a major gift from Edwin and Clara Strasenburgh to the Rochester Museum of Arts and Sciences. This founding marked the beginning of advanced planetarium education in the region.
The Stars with Carl program keeps alive the tradition of live star presentations using the original 1968 Zeiss projector to display constellations overhead. Visitors experience how the night sky's patterns are revealed through this long-standing method.
Regular shows cover current sky observations, planetary systems, and astronomical phenomena with programs tailored for different age groups throughout the week. It helps to check the schedule beforehand since presentations vary in timing and subject matter.
This was the first planetarium worldwide to adopt computer automation for astronomical presentations and educational programs, setting new standards for the field. This pioneering approach allowed visitors to experience technologically advanced sky shows from the beginning.
