Sylvan Beach Union Chapel, Historic chapel in Sylvan Beach, New York.
Sylvan Beach Union Chapel is a wooden structure with white painted walls and a steep pitched roof located on Park Avenue. The building was designed to accommodate worshippers from different religious backgrounds simultaneously.
The Spencer family donated the land in 1887, and construction was completed in just 40 days with the doors opening on July 12. The rapid building process made this one of the most quickly established religious structures in the area.
The chapel has functioned as a gathering space for multiple faith traditions, with visiting clergy from surrounding areas leading services throughout the summer months. This openness to different denominations remains visible in how the community uses the building today.
The chapel is accessible from late June through early September when regular worship services are held on Sunday mornings. Outside these months, the building may not be open for regular public visits.
The building served as a filming location in 1969 for a motion picture that featured actress Liza Minnelli in a leading role. This cinematic connection remains one of the most talked-about aspects of the chapel's modern history.
