Symbiosis, Public sculpture at Howard University, United States.
Symbiosis is a large abstract bronze sculpture on the Howard University campus. The work stretches roughly 75 feet in length and features two massive bronze forms at opposite ends that appear to reach toward one another across the space between them.
The sculpture was donated to Howard University in 1981 as a gift from Board of Trustees member Hobart Taylor Jr. It has remained on campus since its installation, becoming part of the university's public space.
The steel sculpture, created by Richard Hunt, reflects themes of connection on the campus of Howard University, a center of African American education.
The sculpture is located near the Armour J. Blackburn University Center Building on the northwest side of campus. It sits directly on the ground without a raised base, making it easy to view and walk around from multiple angles.
The bronze work has developed a natural patina over the decades that has altered its original finish. This weathering makes the sculpture a living part of the campus landscape, constantly changing with the passage of time.
