Frederick Douglass Memorial Hall, Founders Library, and Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel form a connected group of Gothic-style red brick buildings on campus.
The chapel, constructed in 1895 and named after Jeremiah Rankin's brother Andrew, received a $5,000 contribution from Andrew's widow for its construction.
The chapel welcomed numerous notable speakers including Martin Luther King Jr, Frederick Douglass, Eleanor Roosevelt, and John F Kennedy throughout its history.
The Dean of Chapel office operates weekdays from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with Sunday services held at 11:00 AM in Cramton Auditorium during academic terms.
Howard University became the third institution in the United States to establish a Dean of Chapel position in 1931, after the University of Chicago and Princeton.
