A Bridge Across and Beyond, Bronze sculpture at Howard University, Washington D.C.
A Bridge Across and Beyond is a welded bronze sculpture at Howard University composed of two pyramid structures bending toward each other. The installation spans approximately 75 feet with abstract connecting forms that create a passageway underneath the bronze elements.
American sculptor Richard Hunt created the installation in 1978, with funding through the Mildred Andrew's Fund established by John Debrew Jr. The commission brought this artistic vision to a prominent historically black university campus.
The work displays African-rooted symbolism through its abstract reaching forms and speaks to the connection between the African continent and African American communities. Visitors walking through the site experience this dialogue of connection directly through the physical arrangement of the bronze elements.
The sculpture sits at the Blackburn Center on Howard University campus and can be easily accessed from campus pathways. A fountain that was once integrated into the site is no longer operational and does not function today.
The work was created as a dedication to Katie May Artis Debrew and single mothers worldwide, emphasizing themes of connection and perseverance. This personal dedication connects the monumental bronze form to an intimate human story.
