Banneker Recreation Center, Community center in Columbia Heights, United States
The Banneker Recreation Center features indoor and outdoor pools, game areas, multipurpose rooms, and sports fields across from Howard University campus.
Built in 1934 during the Capital Parks improvement program, this center was completed through initiatives of various New Deal agencies including Civil Works Administration.
Named after Benjamin Banneker, who assisted in surveying District of Columbia boundaries in 1791, this center became a primary recreation facility for African Americans.
The center operates Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 8:30 PM and Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM, with access via Mt Vernon Metro station.
The facility maintains its Colonial Revival architecture while incorporating modern amenities such as synthetic fields for multiple sports and a running track.
