Turner's and Fox's Gaps Historic District
Turner's and Fox's Gaps Historic District, Civil War battlefield district in Frederick and Washington Counties, Maryland
The district extends across South Mountain with Turner's Gap to the north and Fox's Gap to the south, featuring steep terrain and open farmland.
The Battle of South Mountain occurred here on September 14, 1862, with major confrontations at both Turner's Gap and Fox's Gap locations.
The district contains 115 contributing structures, including the Mountain House Inn, now known as the Old South Mountain Inn, and the Reno Monument.
The U.S. Route 40 Alternate, formerly the Old National Pike, provides primary access through Turner's Gap, connecting the Middletown and Hagerstown valleys.
The Appalachian Trail traverses the district along a historic wood road that connects the two gaps through a 12-acre corridor.
