Valley of the Drums, Toxic waste site in Bullitt County, United States

Valley of the Drums is a former waste disposal site in Bullitt County with sloped terrain that drops steeply on multiple sides. The land covers roughly 23 acres and sits in a valley formation that once collected industrial waste materials.

The site served as an unregulated dumping ground for industrial waste during the 1970s before authorities discovered widespread contamination. This problem became a driving force in establishing new federal environmental protection laws.

This location influenced the creation of the 1980 Superfund Act, establishing federal guidelines for managing and cleaning up hazardous waste sites.

The site has limited public access due to ongoing environmental concerns and soil contamination risks. Visitors should check ahead about access conditions before planning a visit to the location.

The location got its name from over 4,200 chemical drums discovered buried across the property during initial environmental investigations. This massive collection of abandoned containers made the site a landmark case for modern environmental protection efforts.
