Wisconsin Heights Battlefield, Historic battlefield in Dane County, United States.
Wisconsin Heights Battlefield is a protected site on the National Register of Historic Places in Dane County, Wisconsin, set within the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway. The terrain along the river valley remains largely open, giving a clear sense of the ground where the engagement took place in 1832.
On July 21, 1832, a small group of warriors led by Black Hawk fought a much larger militia force to cover the retreat of their people toward the Wisconsin River. This was one of the final major engagements of the Black Hawk War, which ended only weeks later.
The site recalls the stand made by Black Hawk's warriors to buy time for others to cross the Wisconsin River. A limestone marker placed in 1923 still stands on the grounds, quietly pointing to what happened there.
The site is accessible by car along Wisconsin Highway 78, south of Sauk City, with parking available nearby. On-site interpretive panels explain the layout of the battle and help visitors make sense of the terrain as they walk through it.
Archaeological surveys of the grounds have turned up lead balls and cartridge buckles from 1832, offering physical traces of the fighting that took place here. For a site of this age, the survival of such small objects in the soil is relatively rare.
