Gibraltar Rock State Natural Area, Protected natural area in Columbia County, Wisconsin
Gibraltar Rock State Natural Area is a protected conservation area featuring sheer rock cliffs that rise dramatically above the Wisconsin River Valley and Lake Wisconsin. The property encompasses roughly 68 acres and provides views across the surrounding landscape.
The property was managed by the Van Ness family during the 1920s before being designated as a protected area in 1969. This conservation effort secured the geological formation for future generations.
The area connects to the Ice Age Trail, a 1000-mile footpath that traces the edge of the last continental glacier in Wisconsin.
A hiking trail departs from a parking area on County Road V and leads to the summit, taking roughly two hours for a round trip. The site is most easily accessed during stable weather and calls for sturdy footwear.
The flat-topped butte represents the highest elevation in the county and supports specialized plant species like cliff goldenrod and columbine. These plants thrive on the exposed cliff tops and make the location botanically significant.
