Winona County Courthouse, County courthouse in Winona, US
The Winona County Courthouse is a county government building in the Richardsonian Romanesque style with a local sandstone facade, multiple towers, and rounded arches. The central clock tower rises prominently above surrounding structures and defines the downtown skyline.
The building was designed in 1889 by architect Charles G. Maybury and became the first courthouse in Minnesota listed on the National Register of Historic Places when added in 1970. This recognition highlighted the structure's importance to American architectural heritage.
The courthouse shows how wealthy Winona became during its days as a river and logging center. Its solid stone construction and grand arches reveal the town's importance in that era.
The building is located on West 3rd Street in the downtown area and continues to serve as the county's administrative center for legal proceedings. Visitors can admire the impressive architecture from the outside or explore the interior when accessible.
The building suffered a ceiling collapse in 2000 that required extensive restoration work. During the renovation, original details such as historic fireplaces were carefully restored to their former appearance.
