Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge, Natural wildlife sanctuary in Buffalo County, United States.
The 6,808-acre refuge encompasses wetlands, sand prairies, and bottomland forests along the eastern edge of the Mississippi River in Wisconsin.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service established this conservation area in 1936 to protect native species and migratory birds along the Mississippi Flyway.
The refuge maintains a collection of native prairie grasses, including big bluestem, indiangrass, and switchgrass that reach heights of eight feet.
Visitors can explore the 4.5-mile Prairie's Edge Tour Loop by car, bicycle, or foot, with observation decks and boat launches available throughout.
The refuge supports 263 bird species and serves as a breeding ground for ten pairs of sandhill cranes within its protected boundaries.
