Great Gull Island, Research station on Great Gull Island, Suffolk County, United States.
Great Gull Island is a 17-acre research station located between Long Island and Block Island sounds, with a concrete observation tower and dedicated laboratory facilities. The site includes lodging for visiting scientists and is equipped with numerous observation points across the island.
The island was home to Fort Michie from 1897 through World War II, which housed one of the largest military gun installations in the country. After the war, the site was transformed into a research facility focused on studying coastal bird populations.
The American Museum of Natural History operates this research station, where scientists work to protect the tern colonies that nest here each breeding season.
Access to the island is restricted and generally granted only for research purposes or special visits with advance permission. The site is closed to the public during the nesting season from May through August when birds are breeding.
The waters surrounding the island form turbulent conditions where deep channels collide with a shallow underwater ridge, creating ideal feeding grounds for numerous fish and bird species. This hydrographic feature makes the location particularly attractive to seabirds seeking abundant food sources.
