Hunterdon County Arboretum, Botanical garden in Lebanon, New Jersey.
Hunterdon County Arboretum is a botanical garden spanning about 73 acres with trails that pass through mixed hardwood forests, coniferous woods, and wetland zones. The paths connect different plant communities that together create a cross-section of the region's natural habitats.
The property was originally a commercial plant nursery founded in 1953 before the Hunterdon County Parks Department acquired it in 1974 and converted it into a public arboretum. This shift from a working nursery to a protected space shaped its subsequent development.
The grounds showcase native plant species along marked trails, helping visitors learn which vegetation naturally belongs to this region. Informational signs at various points explain the local flora and its role in the surrounding ecosystem.
Access to the trails is free daily from sunrise to sunset with no entrance fee required. Parking areas are located at multiple points, making it easy to reach different sections of the property.
A notable feature is a two-story gazebo built in 1893, the oldest of its kind in New Jersey. The structure was relocated to this site from its original location in Readington Township during the late 1970s.
