Red Mill, Historic gristmill in Clinton, US
The Red Mill is a four-story gristmill on the Raritan River bank with stone foundations and heavy wooden beams. The building contains a large water wheel and complex gear systems that ground grain.
The building was created around 1810 and became the center of farm processing in the region. For generations it ground wheat and corn for the community before industry changed.
The building shows how mills shaped community life in early America and what craft skills the work required. Visitors see the tools and spaces where workers processed grain daily.
The grounds are easy to access and guided tours show how the milling system works from inside. Plan enough time to explore all floors and understand how each part functions.
The original grinding stones and wooden gear system still work and show handmade methods from the early 1800s. Many visitors do not know they can actually watch these systems operate during a visit.
