Perryville Tavern, Historic tavern in Union Township, US
Perryville Tavern is a two and a half story brick structure built in the Federal style at 167 Perryville Road, featuring symmetrical design and traditional windows. The building displays classic architectural proportions typical of early 19th-century construction.
The building was constructed in 1813 by Cornelius Carhart along a major stagecoach route that connected communities in the region. Its name commemorates Naval Commander Oliver Hazard Perry's decisive victory in the Battle of Lake Erie.
The building once served as a gathering place where travelers and locals would meet to share news and meals during their journeys. Its role gradually shifted from a public meeting spot to a more private setting over time.
The structure has been at its current location since 1960, when it was relocated to make way for Interstate 78 construction. Visitors should know that this is not where the building originally stood for over a century.
Local artist William Bonnell created a tavern sign featuring a portrait of Andrew Jackson alongside the American flag. This decorative piece reflected the patriotic spirit that such establishments displayed during that era.
