Piketon Mounds, Archaeological site in Pike County, United States.
Piketon Mounds is an archaeological site comprising several prehistoric earthworks of varying dimensions located in Pike County. The largest structure measures approximately 75 feet (23 m) across and rises about 25 feet (7.6 m) high, with four visible mounds remaining within the cemetery grounds.
The mounds were constructed between 1000 BC and 200 AD by early cultures and later documented by researchers in the 1800s. This documentation became important for understanding how ancient peoples engineered these earthworks and their purposes.
The mounds served ceremonial and burial functions for Adena and Hopewell peoples over many centuries. These structures reflect how central such places were to the spiritual life and community practices of these ancient societies.
The site is located within cemetery grounds and is freely accessible for visitors to observe the mounds from the outside. Wear comfortable shoes as the terrain is uneven and exploring the structures requires walking across varied ground.
Excavations here uncovered human remains wrapped in bark, revealing preserved evidence of how these ancient peoples performed burials. Such discoveries are rare and show the care taken in funeral preparation by these cultures.
