Fredericksburg Town Hall and Market Square
Fredericksburg Town Hall and Market Square, Town hall and market square in Fredericksburg, US.
Fredericksburg Town Hall and Market Square is a two-story brick Federal-style structure featuring a five-bay rectangular center block with one-story side wings topped by stone steps at the front entrance. Sandstone arches at the rear open onto Market Square, an open plaza bordered by period buildings.
The building was constructed between 1814 and 1816 and served as city offices until 1982. It received National Register of Historic Places status in 1994.
The building now houses the Fredericksburg Area Museum, presenting exhibitions developed in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution. Visitors can explore regional art and historical objects that tell the story of the area.
The venue is located at 907 Princess Anne Street and is open for public visits and community events. Visitors should check current opening hours and seasonal activities before planning a visit, as programming varies throughout the year.
Basement chambers beneath the market hall once stored goods for local merchants, making this space the economic heart of the colonial town. While these storage areas are no longer visible, the arched structure still hints at the layout of a once-bustling trading zone.
