Mount Desert Light
Mount Desert Light, Lighthouse on Mount Desert Rock, Maine.
Mount Desert Light is a granite tower situated on a rocky island off the coast of Maine that serves as a navigation beacon for vessels in Blue Hill Bay. The 17.5-meter-tall structure topped with a black lantern chamber continues to send light signals through the water to guide maritime traffic safely.
A light station was first established here in 1830, but was later replaced by the current granite tower designed by architect Alexander Parris and built in 1847. This stone structure has stood through decades of exposure to the harsh Atlantic coast environment.
The College of the Atlantic maintains this maritime landmark while conducting research on finback and humpback whales in the surrounding waters.
The lighthouse is visible from the mainland across the water and can be observed from certain elevated coastal viewpoints or by boat. The best way to see it is during clear weather and calmer conditions when visibility of the island and tower is at its best.
The tower stands on an uninhabited island and is now maintained by the College of the Atlantic, which also conducts wildlife research in the surrounding waters. This blend of lighthouse stewardship and scientific study makes the location distinctive in the region.
