Sedgwick Gardens, Art Deco apartment building in Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C.
Sedgwick Gardens is a brick residential building at 3726 Connecticut Avenue distinguished by white brick bands, triangular panels, and wrought iron railings across its facade. The building houses studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments with hardwood floors, updated kitchens, and a 24-hour fitness center.
Architect Mihran Mesrobian designed this residential structure in 1931 for developer Max Gorin and the Southern Construction Company. The project was completed with significant financial investment that reflected the building's ambitious scale and architectural quality.
The entrance displays high relief female figures and bas-relief male sculptures that reflect typical Art Deco design vocabulary. These decorative elements give the building an artistic character that distinguishes it from other residential structures of its era.
The building is easily accessible from Connecticut Avenue with good pedestrian access to the location. Public areas and the entrance lobby can be viewed during business hours, allowing visitors to appreciate the architectural details and interior design.
The interior lobby features Moorish-inspired vaulted ceilings, columns, and a six-sided skylight that display ornamental details from a different design tradition. A restored fountain surrounded by limestone and marble finishes creates a quiet contrast to the exterior facade.
