Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens, Decorative arts museum in Washington, D.C., United States.

Hillwood Estate is a decorative arts museum in Washington, D.C., set within a large property that includes a manor house and landscaped gardens. The building holds rooms filled with French and Russian art objects, while the grounds encompass several separate garden areas with different styles.

The owner purchased the estate in the nineteen fifties and transformed it into a place where she could house her collections. She had acquired artworks during her time in the Soviet Union and later decided to open the estate to the public after her death.

The estate takes its name from the hill where it stands, while the rooms today display Russian icons and French furnishings that visitors can view up close. The collection makes the link between European court art and American collecting spirit visible, offering insight into the private world of a wealthy twentieth-century family.

The site is open several days a week and offers tours through the rooms and grounds. Visitors should plan time to explore both the interior of the house and the different outdoor areas.

The rose garden holds a pink granite monument that marks the final resting place of the former owner. A wooden pergola with climbing roses and white wisteria surrounds the monument, creating a quiet area within the garden layout.
