Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics, high school in Manhattan, New York City
Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics is housed in a historic 1930s building that it shares with Isaac Newton Middle School. The structure has a traditional, stately appearance and sits directly beside the East River, with a busy campus filled with students moving throughout the day.
Built in the 1930s, the building originally functioned as Benjamin Franklin High School before becoming its current institution. Today it serves as part of the city's public school system, educating ninth through twelfth grade students.
The school emphasizes science and math while also valuing reading and writing skills. Students participate in projects and competitions that challenge their abilities and explore their interests through clubs, sports, and research programs.
The school is accessible via multiple bus routes and within walking distance of the subway. Inside, students have access to a gymnasium, library, cafeteria, auditorium, and an on-site health center for their daily needs.
Selected students participate in the Advanced Science Research program, working closely with scientists from nearby colleges and hospitals on special projects. One such project connected students with international partners from Singapore and Hong Kong to conduct research on a rainforest ecosystem in Thailand.
