The Blessed Mother, Religious sculpture at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur, United States
The Blessed Mother is a religious sculpture depicting Mary in an upright position with her arms extended diagonally outward. Constructed from steel and scagliola, the work shows the figure dressed in a blue and white robe that flows to the ground.
The sculpture was commissioned in June 2012 by the Mary's Garden committee and dedicated on September 8, 2013. This date coincided with the celebration of Mary's birthday, creating a meaningful moment for the church community.
The artwork merges traditional religious imagery with modern artistic language, concealing three angels within Mary's flowing robe. Visitors can discover these hidden figures and engage with a deeper layer of the artist's intention.
The work weighs approximately 320 kg and is made from reinforced steel construction with scagliola material to protect it from the elements. A covered platform with a rubber roof provides additional shelter and ensures the installation remains accessible in all weather.
Three metal long-stem roses rest at the base of the sculpture, creating a designated space for floral offerings. This subtle feature invites visitors to leave their own flowers and express a quiet gesture of honor.
