The Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center, Cultural center and art gallery in Lower East Side, New York, US.
The Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center occupies a neo-gothic building on Suffolk Street with four theaters and three exhibition galleries spread across five floors. The complex also houses approximately 46 artist studios and multiple cultural organizations dedicated to Latino performing arts.
The building was originally constructed as Public School 160 in the early 1900s by architect Charles B. J. Snyder and served this purpose for decades. After a fire in the 1970s left it abandoned, the structure was transformed into this cultural center in 1993.
The center supports Puerto Rican and Latino artists through year-round exhibitions and performances that reflect the neighborhood's cultural identity. Walking through the galleries and attending shows here gives visitors a sense of how art shapes daily life in this part of the city.
The center is easily reached by public transportation and located in a walkable area of the Lower East Side near several subway stations. Plan ahead when visiting since different spaces and programs operate on varying schedules, so checking before arrival helps you make the most of your visit.
The building houses SEA, the only bilingual puppet theater company in the United States, which has been producing innovative performances for decades. This specialized company makes the space a hub for experimental and culturally meaningful theater works.
