Mar Chiquita

Mar Chiquita is a natural bay on Puerto Rico's northern coast with limestone walls forming an oval cove and sandy beaches. Ocean water flows through a narrow opening between two rocky outcrops, creating a sheltered swimming area inside the larger bay.

The limestone formations developed over millions of years through geological processes that shaped Puerto Rico's northern coast. This natural structure has remained part of the local landscape and continues to define the area.

The grotto contains a shrine to Virgin del Carmen, showing how religious practice is woven into this natural space. Local people come here to honor this tradition as part of their spiritual connection to the place.

Free parking is available on a packed-sand lot, and food vendors operate during weekends. Keep in mind there are no restrooms or lifeguard services, so plan accordingly.

The water inside the natural pool changes constantly depending on how tides and waves affect the narrow opening. This means swimming conditions shift throughout the day, making each visit somewhat unpredictable.
