Alter Markt, square in Potsdam, Germany
The Alter Markt is a central square in the historic core of Potsdam, surrounded by 18th-century buildings with Italian-style facades. A marble obelisk from 1753 stands in the middle, while St. Nicholas Church with its distinctive dome dominates the northern side, and the Old Town Hall with its ornate details completes the ensemble.
The square was designed in the mid-18th century under Frederick the Great and laid out as an elegant marketplace following Italian patterns. After bomb damage in 1945, it was partially rebuilt, and since German reunification has been gradually restored to recover its 18th-century appearance.
The Alter Markt was originally a trading place where markets occurred twice weekly and people bought and sold goods. Today residents and visitors gather here for festivals and events, while cafes around the square invite people to sit and watch the everyday rhythm of the city.
The square is easily reached on foot and offers plenty of space to walk and explore the surrounding buildings. Numerous cafes and restaurants around the area provide places to stop and take in the surroundings.
The obelisk in the center of the square has been modified over time and now displays portraits of architects who helped rebuild Potsdam. This transformation from a pure monument to a tribute to modern builders shows how historical objects can be adapted to carry new meanings.
