Bittschriftenlinde Potsdam, Historical petition tree at City Palace, Germany
The Bittschriftenlinde stands at the southern corner of the Brandenburg State Parliament building on Humboldtstrasse in central Potsdam.
King Frederick II of Prussia regularly received citizen petitions under this tree, which was visible from his study window in the City Palace.
The tree became a symbol of direct communication between citizens and rulers, as people would attach their written requests directly to its branches.
The current linden tree, planted in 1993 for Potsdam's millennium celebration, was temporarily relocated during construction and returned to its place in 2015.
A modern information panel near the tree includes a data code allowing visitors to access additional historical information through their mobile phones.
