Lange Brücke, Road bridge in Potsdam, Germany
Lange Brücke is a concrete structure that crosses the Havel River in central Potsdam with four main segments. It was designed to span railway tracks beneath while keeping river traffic unobstructed.
This crossing was built in 1959 as the sixth structure at this location since 1317. Earlier bridges were made of wood and stone before the city chose a modern concrete solution.
The bridge links the historic city center with residential neighborhoods to the south and serves as a daily passage for pedestrians and cyclists. It shapes how people move through different parts of the city.
The crossing is easily reached on foot or by bike and offers good views of the river and city from above. Information boards at both ends explain the structure's history and surroundings.
The structure received the Brandenburg Architecture Prize in 2011 for its functional design fitting the city landscape. Its construction solves a complex problem by spanning both water and railway tracks at the same time.
