Berliner-Kindl-Brauerei am Brauhausberg, Historic brewery complex in Teltower Vorstadt, Germany
Berliner-Kindl-Brauerei am Brauhausberg is an industrial complex made of sturdy brick with several functional buildings including storage halls, a bottling plant, and office structures along Albert-Einstein-Strasse. The entire facility spreads across the slope of Brauhausberg mountain and took advantage of its natural features for production.
The facility was established in 1884 when the Hoffmann brothers founded the brewery, and was later taken over by Berliner Kindl, which expanded it multiple times between 1897 and 1925. Operations ended in 1995 and the site was converted into residential space after renovation in 2015.
The brick facades display expressionist design language that reflects the industrial heritage of the place. Visitors can still sense the connection between the architecture and the craft beer production that took place here for generations.
The renovated site is today accessible as residential complex Hofgarten am Brauhausberg and offers a good overview of the former industrial architecture. The brick construction and overall composition allow visitors to understand the structure and layout of the former production facility.
The brewery used natural cellar chambers built into the slope of Brauhausberg mountain to store beer in cool conditions. These underground structures were a clever system for temperature control long before modern refrigeration machines were invented.
