Kelsterbach is a town near Frankfurt where the Kelster stream meets the Main River. It sits at about 350 feet (107 meters) elevation and spreads along the riverbank on Frankfurt's southwest side.
Digs in 2004 uncovered traces of a Roman settlement dating to around 200-220 AD. The place started as a farming village but changed into an industrial town once factories arrived in the early 1900s.
The artificial silk industry shaped how residents see their town, even though the factories are now closed. You can still feel this manufacturing heritage in the buildings and in how locals talk about their city's past.
The town sits near Frankfurt and connects directly through highways B40a and B43, making it easy to reach the airport or city center. Regular trains go straight to Frankfurt Central Station, so arriving by public transport is straightforward.
The artificial silk factory Vereinigte Kunstseidenfabrik was once one of the town's biggest employers and drew workers from across the region. Some factory buildings still stand today, reminding visitors of when the town's livelihood depended almost entirely on this industry.
