Schneck, Mountain peak in Allgäu Alps, Bavaria, Germany.
Schneck is a mountain peak in the Allgäu Alps, located in the southern part of Bavaria near the Austrian border. The summit sits at around 7,400 ft (2,268 m) and is reached by trails that cross steep rock faces and exposed ridges.
The peak was shaped during the ice ages, when glaciers carved out the rock faces and ridges that define its silhouette today. Over time it became a natural reference point for the communities living in the valleys below.
Local mountaineering clubs regularly organize guided climbs to the summit, maintaining the traditions of Bavarian alpine sports.
The full round-trip takes around nine hours and requires sure-footedness on rocky terrain. Hikers can stop at the Berggasthof Oytalhaus nearby, which offers meals and lodging before or after the climb.
A large summit cross marks the top and can be seen from a long distance as hikers approach along the ridge. Despite the long approach, the route is considered one of the more rewarding in the Allgäuer Hochalpen because of how the terrain changes from valley to summit.
