Seealpsee is a mountain lake in the Allgäu Alps near Oberstdorf, set in a glacial cirque. It is roughly 480 meters long and 240 meters wide, enclosed by sheer rock faces and steep grassy slopes.
The basin was carved out at the end of the last ice age, when a glacier ground away the rock and left a natural hollow. The site is now protected as a natural monument and geotope.
The lake sits in a bowl ringed by steep grassy walls, giving it an unusually enclosed feel compared to other alpine lakes. Hikers often stop here to rest before continuing toward the surrounding peaks.
The path to the lake starts at Höfatsblick station and takes about one hour on foot, with rocky sections that require sturdy footwear. Alpine weather can change fast, so carry a rain layer and dress in layers regardless of the forecast.
The lake sits directly below the Höfats, one of the few peaks in the region whose upper slopes are almost entirely made of steep grass rather than rock. On a clear day, those grassy flanks reflect in the water below.
