Mainspitze, Headland and tourist attraction in Groß-Gerau, Germany
Mainspitze is a natural headland in the Groß-Gerau district, sitting at the point where the Main river flows into the Rhine. Narrow riverside paths run along both banks and lead to the tip of the land, where the two currents meet.
The meeting point of the Main and the Rhine has been known since the Middle Ages as a reference for river navigation and trade. Over time, engineering work along the Rhine changed the exact shape of the bank, but the confluence stayed in the same place.
The name Mainspitze simply means the tip or point of the Main, referring to the narrow land that reaches toward the Rhine. Locals gather here on weekends to walk along the water and watch the two rivers side by side before they join.
The site is easy to reach on foot and is well signed, with parking available near the access paths. The riverside paths can be uneven in places, so sturdy shoes are a good idea, especially after rain.
Although Mainspitze looks like a fixed point of land, its exact shape shifts with the water level, and parts of the paths can flood when the rivers rise. The color difference between the yellowish Main and the grey-green Rhine is visible to the naked eye right at the confluence.
