Weisenauer Synagogue is a small, single-storey building with a pitched tiled roof, built in 1737/38 on the foundations of an older secular structure. It stands directly on a steep slope on Wormser Strasse where a spring emerges from the rock. From the street only part of the tiled roof is visible; the building is reached through a narrow passage closed by a wooden door.

Built in 1737/38 on the foundations of an older secular building, the synagogue was financed by a loan of 3400 guilders from Anselm Franz Freiherr von Ingelheim to the Jewish community. It was damaged during the 1793 siege of Mainz, and the roof was only renewed by 1818. In the November 1938 pogrom it was looted and its interior destroyed, but not set on fire for fear the flames would spread to the tightly packed neighbouring houses.

The name recalls the village of Weisenau, which lay outside Mainz's walls when the synagogue was built. A wedding held here in 1938 was among the last religious acts before the November pogrom, when the interior was looted and wrecked. Since 27 May 1996, the Monday of Pentecost, the Ner Tamid has burned again, rekindled by Rabbi Leo Trepp exactly 900 years after the Gezerot Tatnu of 1096, in which over 500 Jews of Mainz died. Stolpersteine in nearby streets commemorate members of the community who were deported.

The building is reached only through a narrow passage on Wormser Straße, closed by a wooden door; from the street just part of the tiled roof is visible. The synagogue stands directly on a steep slope where a spring emerges from the rock, and the mikveh found on the grounds was fed by this spring.

A mikveh fed by the spring that emerges from the rock at this spot was found on the grounds. The spring also explains the sheltered siting of the building against the slope, and the ritual bath links the water source to the community's religious practice.
