Plytenberg, Archaeological site in Leer, Germany.

Plytenberg is an oval earth mound near Leer with a base measuring about 62 by 56 meters and standing roughly 12 meters high. Its shape and size make it a noticeable landmark in the flat landscape of the region.

Archaeological investigations in the early 1990s revealed that this mound served as an observation point for Leerort fortress during the 15th century. This military use suggests the location held strategic importance for local control of the area.

The mound appears in local stories as a home for Erdmantjes, mystical earth spirits, as documented by author Albrecht Janssen. These folk narratives still influence how residents think about and describe this place today.

Exploring the mound requires dealing with uneven ground and elevation changes that are not accessible to wheelchair users. Good footwear and reasonable fitness are helpful for fully experiencing the site.

A regional legend tells of a giant who dropped a sack of earth at this location, creating both the mound and its name. This story connects the place to local mythology that has been passed down through generations.
