The Plytenberg stands as an oval earth mound measuring 62 by 56 meters at its base and reaches a height of 12 meters.
Archaeological investigations in the early 1990s determined that the mound served as an observation point for the Leerort fortress during the 15th century.
Local folklore includes tales of earth spirits called Erdmantjes residing within the mound, as documented in stories by author Albrecht Janssen.
The site requires physical mobility to access and explore, as the terrain and elevation changes make it inaccessible for wheelchair users.
A regional legend tells of a giant who dropped a sack of earth at this location, leading to the creation and naming of Plytenberg.
