Scharounschule, Educational complex in Marl, Germany
Scharounschule is a school complex in Marl comprising five wings radiating from a central auditorium. Classrooms are arranged in hexagonal units that include common spaces and outdoor areas for daily use.
Hans Scharoun designed this building between 1964 and 1970 during the post-war modernist movement. The project emerged when North Rhine-Westphalia needed new schools and was exploring innovative design approaches.
The school displays organic architecture with irregular spaces and warm materials that embrace natural light. Visitors notice how the unusual shape of classrooms makes the space feel different from standard school buildings.
The building underwent major renovations from 2010 to 2015 and functions well for daily activities. Today both the Aloysius primary school and the municipal music school share the facilities.
The central auditorium has acoustic properties similar to those of the Berlin Philharmonie. This makes the space particularly well-suited for musical performances and concerts.
