WestendDou, Modern office tower in Westend, Germany
WestendDuo is a modern office tower in Frankfurt's Westend district, made up of two glass and steel volumes connected at their base and rising to 96 meters across 26 floors. It sits in a dense business neighborhood west of the city center, where several other tall buildings stand close together.
The building was completed in December 2006, replacing an earlier structure from the 1960s designed by architect Egon Eiermann. That earlier building belonged to the postwar generation of Frankfurt architecture, while the current tower reflects the city's later turn toward glass-heavy commercial construction.
The ground floor of WestendDuo holds an Italian restaurant and a sushi shop used mostly by people working nearby. These two spots give the building a street-level presence that is more social than most office towers in the area.
The Westend district is well connected by subway and tram, making it easy to reach on foot from nearby stations. The building is a working office tower, so visitors without an appointment are best placed heading to the ground-floor businesses rather than the upper floors.
The floor-to-ceiling windows in WestendDuo can be opened by hand, which is unusual for a building of this size. They work alongside an external sun shading system fixed to the facade, allowing occupants to control both light and air without relying solely on mechanical systems.
