Renthof

The Renthof is a building in central Kassel that combines Gothic characteristics with modern elements and features a central courtyard. The structure comprises several wings arranged around this court, creating a cohesive architectural complex.

The building was founded in 1262 as a Carmelite monastery and underwent a major transformation when it became a court school in 1526 under Count Moritz. This restructuring marked a fundamental shift in the place's use and purpose.

The building housed the Court School where composer Heinrich Schütz received his musical education, establishing its connection to German classical music.

The building now operates as a hotel, offering guests accommodations with modern amenities for their stay. When visiting, you can explore the renovated spaces while experiencing the historical architectural features that have been preserved throughout.

During World War II, the Renthof remained partially intact despite the massive bombing that destroyed 80 percent of Kassel's buildings. This resilience made it a rare survivor from that tumultuous period.
