Kloster Ahnaberg, Medieval monastery in Kassel, Germany.
Kloster Ahnaberg is a former Premonstratensian monastery located between the Ahna and Fulda rivers in Kassel, with surviving buildings dating to the 12th century. The site now serves as part of the Oskar-von-Miller School campus in the Wesertor district, with structures adapted for educational use.
Landgravine Hedwig of Thuringia and Count Heinrich Raspe II founded the monastery between 1140 and 1148 as a religious community for monks and nuns. Emperor Heinrich VI granted it special protection privileges in 1192, securing its independence from regional powers throughout the medieval period.
The monastery served as a spiritual destination where nobility sought burial and prayer. Visitors can still sense the religious importance of this place through its architectural layout and surviving structures.
The monastery is located in the Wesertor district and now functions as part of an active school, which limits public access to the grounds. It is best to check ahead before visiting, as the buildings are still in regular use for educational purposes.
The monastery once housed valuable medieval artworks, including a spectacular 15th-century winged altar that demonstrated its importance as a cultural center. These treasures reveal that the site was a place of both spiritual devotion and artistic achievement.
