Mercedes-Hochhaus, High-rise building in Wesertor district, Kassel, Germany
The Mercedes-Hochhaus is a residential tower in the Wesertor district with 18 floors standing near Holländischer Platz and housing over 200 apartments along with commercial spaces. The building shapes the city skyline with its roughly 55-meter height and presents the clean, functional design typical of postwar architecture.
The structure was completed in 1969 and was the tallest building in Kassel at that time, breaking the previous record set by the Wintershall-Hochhaus. Its construction reflects the urban expansion and building boom that shaped Kassel during the postwar decades.
The building houses 216 residential units where people from multiple nationalities live together in the central area of Kassel.
The tower is easy to reach from Holländischer Platz and offers wide views of the city from its height. Visitors can explore the surrounding area on foot without needing special conditions to view the building's exterior.
A rotating Mercedes star crowned the rooftop from 1972 until December 2021, serving as the building's signature landmark, before Daimler removed it as part of a nationwide campaign. This symbol became a familiar silhouette in Kassel's night sky and shaped the city's appearance for nearly five decades.
