Gut Ullenhausen, Kloster in Deutschland
Gut Ullenhausen is a manor house with outbuildings in Extertal, constructed from stone and timber dating to the 16th century. The main dwelling features steep roofs and large windows, while a storage building from the late 1600s is built with bricks and wooden framing.
The estate was established in 1557 on the site of a Benedictine convent founded around 1240, which declined by 1407 and fell into disrepair. Ownership passed through several families including the Werpups, von Altens, and the Brabands, who have managed it since 1937.
The name Gut Ullenhausen reflects the 1557 transformation from a religious community to a private estate. The stone and timber construction visible today demonstrates how local building traditions and craft skills developed over centuries.
The estate is visible from outside but not open to visitors, as it remains a private residence and working farm. Access is by local roads through Extertal, and the area is best explored on foot or by car around the perimeter.
The buildings underwent extensive restoration between 2018 and 2019, with craftspeople using traditional techniques to preserve the timber, brick, and stonework. This careful work maintained historical details and original colors, keeping the construction methods of past centuries visible.
