Schloss Alverdissen is a plain two-storey rectangular building with a gabled roof in the Barntrup district of Alverdissen. Friedrich Christian of Schaumburg-Lippe laid its foundation stone in 1662; the three-storey Baroque house with a hipped roof and a projecting stair tower was built in 1662–1663. Its curved north wall may hold remains of the medieval castle wall.

A castle of the Sternberg counts stood here by 1396 and passed to the House of Lippe in 1405; town and castle were destroyed in 1424 and rebuilt by 1450. From 1613 Alverdissen served as a Paragium for Philipp I of Schaumburg-Lippe, and his son Friedrich Christian laid the foundation stone of the present building in 1662. Princess Pauline of Lippe bought castle, office and town in 1812; from 1879 to 1969 it housed the Alverdissen district court, and from 1979 to 2008 the Detmold state archive.

The name Alverdissen comes from the Lords of Sternberg, who founded the settlement in 1151; the castle passed to the House of Lippe in 1405. From 1613 it served as a Paragium, an apanage, for Philipp I Count of Schaumburg-Lippe, and from 1640 the place belonged to the County of Schaumburg-Lippe. From 1879 to 1969 the building housed the Alverdissen district court.

Schloss Alverdissen has been privately owned since 2009 and is not open to the public, so visits are limited to viewing the building from outside. The roughly 1.5-hectare Schlosspark is bordered by the Exter to the east and north and by a rubble-stone wall to the south and west.

It holds notable 19th-century trees and is now partly a low-maintenance green area and partly a meadow orchard. A 1626 copper engraving shows a formal Renaissance garden, though the castle itself was not yet built then, so it is probably a design.
