Pegelhaus, Stream gauge building in Worms, Germany
The Pegelhaus is a gauge station on the Rhine riverbank in Worms featuring a distinctive round tower shape with a pointed roof. The structure continuously monitors water levels and displays current measurements on both the river and land sides.
The building was constructed in the late 1920s and stands alongside two older structures from 1855: the Gelderhaus and Dammwächterhaus. Together, these three buildings document the evolution of Rhine monitoring across decades.
The building demonstrates how people managed and tracked Rhine water levels in the early 20th century. Its round tower form was a practical design choice for the daily work of gauge observers.
The station is directly accessible from the riverbank and water levels can be viewed from both sides. The best time to visit is during daylight when the displays are most clearly visible.
The station recorded an extreme water level event when measurements dropped to just centimeters, highlighting how critical such stations are for tracking climate patterns. This rare occurrence revealed the vulnerability of the Rhine to extended dry periods.
